Case Study: Carbanak APT

Carbanak describes an active hacker group, so called an Advanced Persistent threat that has been attacking financial instiutions for nearly a decade. The group is called an APT due to the highly advanced attacks that they do, similar to the kind perpretrated by State sponsered hackers. The group is assumed to operate from Eastern Europe and Russia. It was first uncovered in 2014 by Kaspersky Lab. The Group has been attributed to nearly 1 Billion USD in thefts from financial instiutions.

Method Of Operation


The gang has been known to spend a very long time on any one target. Unlike most cyber crime groups looking for a quick profit, Carbanak researches their subjects for 2-4 months on average.
