Bugs in Videogames

Bugs are frequently detected in all software code, and above all in video games code:

Nowaday these bugs are more common than in the past, as a result of the game patches and updates that allow developers to fix the bugs after the release of the game. The presence of problems is not a good welcome for a player and could be annoying and frustrating.

It is hard to debug and program a game code without bugs and glitch. You have to hope that your unexpected bugs are harmless during the gameplay.
If a bug is not too invasive and lets the player play the game, they are not pushed to quit and give a bad rate.

1) Freezing, Hanging or Crashing

These types of bugs stuck the player during the gameplay can happen if the player's hardware is too busy or has some problems.
This definitely blocks the gameplay, provoking annoying and bad feelings in gameplay.

A famous case of this problem was reported by a few players in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 (PC version) which had problems with crashing freezing when they wanted to switching to secondary weapons in game. To prevent this problem, before the game had been updated and fixed, the players find a loophole such as removing accessories from the game guns or using default skins.

2) Graphics Glitch

Graphics Glitch is an issue with the image displayed within the game;
the image could be everything given in output from the game code such as the player’s character, the map, the stuff in world game or simply the user interface.
This bug can hamper the gameplay because the glitch could be simply a corrupted skin but can also be a distortion of all the maps or the player’s movement.

An example of Graphics Glitch was in The Sims 4 where two glitches were present: Some babies texture were distorted into demonic texture; The other was a fork being for all the gameplay time to the Sim’s hand.

3) Gameplay Defect

Gameplay Defect is an error that exists when a particular feature or response is not functioning as planned in the game code.
This problem could be a huge problem because it removes the player’s ability to do a determinate activity such as a movement or interaction with the world.

This bug can put some players in a disadvantaged position, for example in the famous video game Sea of Thieves:
where a lot of players reported that they were not able to use any inventory item excluding cannonballs and bananas, then players can meet other players that are able to use every item and find themselves at a disadvantage.

4) In-game Purchase

In-game purchase issues could be unexpected errors on the shop, unable to complete the process of payment, charged failed purchase etc. These types of bugs can waste player’s money or hamper them from advancing in gameplay through special items and contents.
For this bug the problem can be resolved easily through the common section “Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)” present in the game menu.

A case of this problem has happened in the popular video game Fortnite, related to Vbucks (the fortnite’s currency). The Epic Games (developer company of the game) has found that a few players got an error message during the purchase of Vbucks or a long delay in receiving it after purchase.

5)Audio Problem

As shown in the name the error is in the sound or in the music.
This error can be missing, delayed or erroneous sound effects, can bother the players with a change of volume or an annoying sound.

This bug happened in many games, for example also in the famous video games Tomb Raider and BioShock Infinite. In the first example the game sound fades in and out and outright disappears.
On the second one the sound error depended on the action and the act of moving or position of the character.

6) Text Problem

The text bug could be a mistyped, misplaced, unaligned text inside a textbox. The problem can also be a wrong word or sometimes a code shown instead of text.
This can be a problem when it hinders the player from understanding the storyline of the video game.

A famous case has happened on the Dissidia Final Fantasy: Opera Omnia where the creators admitted in a tweet that they are conscious of the missing text bug and announce they will debug it as soon as possible.

7) Save Glitch

Save Glitch is the ultimate game-breaking one. This bug can manifest like unable to save or corruption in saving files.
Player that has spent players can find themselves unsaved after a long playing time and it sure is frustrating.
